Jogen Chowdhury is celebrated for his remarkable ability to seamlessly merge traditional
imagery with the contemporary pulse of painting. His artistic finesse gracefully bridges the
gap between cosmopolitan self-awareness and the profound influence of his Bengali
heritage. His early works bear a keen attention to figuration, a characteristic that remains
discernible in his current oeuvre. Reflecting on his early creations, Chowdhury remarked that
these pieces projected a simple iconic presence with a spatial sequence that, though
structured, lacked complexity. The background appeared to dissolve into the artwork.
Anshuman Dasgupta describes these early works as more iconic and dramatized. In contrast,
Chowdhury characterizes his later creations as "more personalized and subtle."During his
college years, Chowdhury associated with leftist literary circles that often-dismissed
Rabindranath Tagore as a bourgeoisie figure, favouring instead the works of Russian authors.
However, he generally maintained a certain detachment from cultural movements. Despite
his friendship with members of the Hungry Generation, his artistic inspiration stemmed
more from his cultural roots than his intellectual milieu.Chowdhury emphasized the
relevance of his background, elucidating how his life in Calcutta was marked by political
turbulence. This turmoil left an indelible mark on his work, such as the "Ganesha period,"

where he explored themes like the Bengali business class worshipping icons and their
subsequent degeneration. His formative years were clouded by events like famine, Partition,
and the food movement, imbuing his work with a sense of darkness and mystery. This aura
of mystery has deepened in his recent works, where he deliberately crops the central image,
creating a sense of intrigue and distance. In discussing contemporary art, Chowdhury
underscores the importance of maintaining an authentic Indian approach rather than blindly
emulating Western trends. He believes that being globally relevant does not necessitate
imitation but calls for a genuine expression of one's unique identity.Born in 1939 in Faridpur,
Bengal, Chowdhury pursued his artistic education at the Government College of Art and
Crafts, Kolkata, from 1955 to 1960. He further honed his skills at L'Ecole Nationale Superior
des Beaux-Arts, Paris, from 1965 to 1967, supported by a French Government Scholarship.
His recent solo exhibitions, including 'A Calligraphy of Touch and Gaze' in 2008 and
'Abahoman: Flowing Life' in 2007, have garnered acclaim. Chowdhury's artistic reach
extends globally with exhibitions at venues like Gajah Gallery in Singapore, Gallerie
Foundation for Indian Artists in Amsterdam, and Fine Art Resource in Berlin.Chowdhury's
artistic prowess has earned him numerous accolades, including the Prix le France de la Jeune
Peinture in Paris in 1966 and an award at the Second Biennale of Havana, Cuba, in 1986. In
2001, he received the Kalidas Sanman from the Government of Madhya Pradesh.Today,
Jogen Chowdhury resides and continues to create in Santiniketan.
