Description:

A PERSIAN PRAYER CARPET, NO RESERVE
Iran, late 19th to early 20th century

Description:
Wool on cotton; the mihrab design framed by intricate repeating floral and geometric motifs in a refined palette of soft beige, camel, olive, rose, and indigo. The central field is flanked by triple borders with stylized floral detailing. Featuring a distinct directional design typical of prayer rugs, with a pointed arch symbolizing the mihrab (prayer niche) of a mosque. Finely knotted with short fringes on both ends.

Dimensions: 330 x 93 cm

This elegant example of Persian textile artistry combines devotional function with aesthetic beauty. The design reflects classical Persian influences, particularly from the Qom and Kashan weaving traditions, showcasing a meticulous balance of symmetry and color. The rug is well-preserved with minor wear consistent with age and use.

Comparable examples:
A Persian prayer rug of similar format sold at Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art, 24 April 2017, Lot 46, for £2,000.
Another closely related Persian mihrab-design rug from early 20th century achieved £2,500 at Sotheby’s, Arts of the Islamic World, 20 October 2020, Lot 109.

Note:
Prayer rugs such as this were often woven for both private devotion and as gifts of religious and cultural significance. The refined craftsmanship and harmonious coloration suggest it may have been made for a wealthy patron or a religious scholar.
