Description:

Lot 142. A BRASS EWER, 19TH CENTURY, QAJAR, PERSIA

This brass ewer from 19th-century Qajar Persia exemplifies the elegance and symbolism characteristic of Persian metalwork from the period.

The ewer features a globular body tapering to a narrow neck and sits on a short circular foot. The spout is cast in the form of a stylised lion or dragon head, complete with incised facial details and an open mouth—motifs symbolic of protection and power in Persian art. The handle, gracefully arched and terminating in another zoomorphic form, balances the overall composition. The hinged domed lid, surmounted by a pointed finial, adds a functional yet regal touch.

The surface retains its rich golden patina, with traces of verdigris accentuating the recessed areas, lending the vessel a depth that speaks to its age and authenticity. Such ewers were traditionally used for pouring water or rosewater in ceremonial or domestic contexts, reflecting both artistry and refinement in everyday ritual.
