Description:

A CALLIGRAPHIC INSCRIBED AGATE AMULET ON SILVER IN THE FORM OF A CROWN, 19TH CENTURY, PERSIA
Qajar Iran, 19th century

Description:
A finely worked amulet consisting of an inscribed agate set within a silver mount in the stylised form of a Persian crown. The agate bears a detailed Arabic inscription in elegant naskh script, possibly invoking divine names or protective phrases. The stone is smoothly polished and semi-translucent, revealing subtle natural banding. The mount, shaped with stepped terminals and lobed contours, suggests the piece may have been stitched into a textile, worn, or suspended.

The crown form adds an element of symbolic power and reverence, and the craftsmanship of both the calligraphy and metalwork reflects high-quality Qajar-period production. The stone and mount are in excellent condition with minor surface wear consistent with age.

Dimensions:
Length: 4cm
Weight: 25g

  • A related Qajar pendant with calligraphic agate and ornamental silver setting, Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art, London, 11 June 2008, Lot 179, sold for £4,800.

  • A similar piece in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, inv. no. IS.104-1985, published in Islamic Amulets, Rachel Ward, 2012.

Note:
Amulets combining inscribed stones and symbolic mounts held spiritual significance across Islamic cultures. In Qajar Iran, such pieces were often gifted or worn to invoke protection, divine blessings, or commemorate sacred names. The crown-shaped silver setting adds both stylistic elegance and allusion to sovereignty, making this example especially distinctive.
