Description:

A SQUARE CARNELIAN INTAGLIO RING WITH FLORAL CALLIGRAPHY, 19TH CENTURY, PERSIA
Qajar Iran, 19th century

Description:
A silver ring set with a finely engraved square carnelian intaglio, featuring Arabic calligraphy in elegant nastaʿlīq script. The inscription is framed by delicate floral motifs, with small blossoms and vine-like accents punctuating the composition. The carnelian displays a deep orange-red hue and is crisply polished, while the silver mount is of plain form with grooved shoulders, lending a restrained elegance to the overall presentation.

The quality of the carving and symmetrical layout suggest this was a personalised devotional ring, possibly engraved with the wearer’s name, a benediction, or a Qur’anic excerpt. The floral embellishment is typical of Qajar aesthetic preferences for integrating vegetal and epigraphic design.

Note:
The pairing of floral designs with devotional inscriptions is a hallmark of Qajar-period lapidary art. Rings like this were valued as much for their protective and spiritual roles as for their visual charm. The balance between script and ornamentation on this ring speaks to the refined taste and technical skill of its maker.
