Description:

 A CALLIGRAPHIC INSCRIBED AGATE TABLET
Persia, 19th Century

Description:
This finely crafted agate tablet showcases a remarkable example of Persian lapidary and calligraphic artistry. Expertly inscribed in delicate nasta‘liq script across its polished surface, the reddish-brown agate bears several lines of devotional or poetic Persian verse. The calligraphy is meticulously aligned within an oval cartouche, with careful attention to symmetry and composition—hallmarks of refined Persian craftsmanship.

Such inscribed stones were traditionally used as amulets, talismans, or personal devotional items, often worn in rings or carried by scholars and mystics. The clarity of the script and the quality of the agate suggest that this piece was likely commissioned for a high-status patron.

Dimensions:

  • Length: 4 cm

Comparable Examples:

  • British Museum, London: Inscribed agate seal of Safavid origin, similar dimensions and script.

  • Sotheby’s Arts of the Islamic World, 2018: A Persian agate amulet, sold for £3,500.

  • Khalili Collection: Mughal and Persian gem carvings with nasta‘liq inscriptions.

Notes:
The tablet’s elegant form and rich carnelian hue, combined with the masterful engraving, make it an object of both spiritual and artistic value. This piece would make an exceptional addition to a collection of Islamic calligraphy, engraved gemstones, or Persian devotional objects.
