Description:

A CALLIGRAPHIC INSCRIBED ROCK CRYSTAL AMULET, 19TH CENTURY, PERSIA
Qajar Iran, 19th century

Description:
A tear-drop shaped rock crystal amulet, engraved on the front with fine Arabic inscriptions in elegant horizontal lines of naskh script. The reverse is intricately cut with a stepped geometric pattern, radiating outward from the centre in a faceted design that enhances the transparency and brilliance of the crystal. The contrast between the engraved text and the sculptural reverse showcases the dual artistry of inscription and lapidary carving in Qajar devotional objects.

Highly polished throughout, the amulet has natural internal inclusions and displays minimal surface wear. It would likely have been kept in a pouch or worn in a protective mount, serving both as a spiritual safeguard and an item of personal prestige.

Dimensions:
Length: 7cm
Weight: 62g

  • A 19th-century Persian crystal talisman with carved rear facets, Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art, London, 25 October 2016, Lot 74, sold for £7,500.

  • A comparable faceted amulet in the Khalili Collection, published in Arts of Islam: Treasures from the Nasser D. Khalili Collection, 2007.

Note:
Rock crystal held deep symbolic meaning in Islamic tradition, associated with purity, divine light, and protection. Amulets such as this combined sacred text with refined craftsmanship, intended to protect the wearer while reflecting their piety and social standing. The cut reverse adds an optical brilliance rarely seen in typical amulets, enhancing its visual and spiritual resonance.
