Description:

 CALLIGRAPHIC SILK LAMPAS PANEL
Probably Ottoman, Bursa, 18th/19th Century

Description:
An exceptional and rare silk lampas panel woven with calligraphic motifs, most likely produced in Bursa, a historic Ottoman center for luxurious textile production. This large textile features elegant bands of thuluth-style calligraphywoven into the silk in alternating horizontal registers, often incorporating Qur’anic phrases or invocations of divine blessings (duʿā). The inscriptions are flanked by scrolling arabesques and stylized palmettes, with floral motifs subtly embedded in the composition.

The woven texture, sheen, and refinement are characteristic of high-quality silk lampas weaving from the late Ottoman period, particularly associated with religious or court ceremonial textiles. Such pieces were commonly used as architectural hangings, tomb covers, or kaftan linings, and are rare survivals.

Dimensions:
Length: 114 cm
Width: 80 cm

Provenance:

  • From a Private Middle Eastern Collection, acquired in the 1960s.

Comparable Examples:

  • A similar silk calligraphic panel attributed to 18th-century Bursa in the Topkapı Palace Museum features comparable thuluth inscriptions and design motifs.

  • A 19th-century Ottoman calligraphic textile (silk and metallic thread) sold at Sotheby’s, 2015, for £24,000.

  • A fragment of silk lampas with Qur'anic inscriptions from Bursa, dated 18th century, is documented in the Textile Museum, Washington D.C.

Note:
This panel is a stunning testament to the Ottoman synthesis of sacred text and luxury craftsmanship. Its large format, rhythmic calligraphy, and historic textile technique make it an exceptional collector’s item, ideal for connoisseurs of Islamic art, calligraphy, and antique Ottoman textiles
