Description:

A CELADON GLAZED JARDINERE, 19TH CENTURY, QING DYNASTY (1644-1911) A celadon-glazed jardiniere with matching stand, the pot of rounded rectangular form with vertically ribbed sides and a scalloped rim. The pale olive-green glaze pools attractively in the recessed flutes, giving depth to the moulded surface. Around the centre is a white-ground band painted in underglaze blue with repeated stylised characters, providing a strong decorative contrast against the celadon body. The form and drainage hole indicate its use as a plant container, while the separate stand would have caught water and protected the surface beneath. The ribbed modelling and soft celadon glaze draw on long-established Chinese ceramic traditions, while the blue-and-white inscription-style band adds a more formal auspicious element. Such jardinières were popular in Qing domestic and scholar’s interiors, where potted plants, miniature trees and seasonal flowers were appreciated as part of refined interior display. The underside views show an unglazed base with signs of use and age, consistent with its functional role. The stand is similarly ribbed and raised on small feet. Diameter of pot: 23 cm Height of pot: 15.5 cm Diameter of bottom: 23.5 cm
