Description:

A CHINESE BRONZE "ONE HUNDRED ANTIQUE" INSCRIBED TRIPOD INCENSE BURNER, QING DYNASTY (1644-1911) A Chinese bronze tripod incense burner of compressed globular form, raised on three short feet and set with loop handles to either side. The exterior is cast in relief with auspicious objects from the “One Hundred Antiques” decorative vocabulary, including scholarly and symbolic motifs such as paired fish, vessels and knot-like emblems. The underside bears a six-character apocryphal Xuande mark, reading Da Ming Xuande nian zhi. Such marks were frequently used on later Chinese bronzes in reference to the celebrated Xuande-period bronze tradition, rather than necessarily indicating a Ming date. The form and surface treatment are consistent with Qing dynasty bronze incense burners made for the scholar’s table or domestic altar. The vessel has a dark brown-black patina with reddish undertones, scattered green oxidation and surface wear. The interior shows a lighter, well-used patinated surface, appropriate for an incense burner. Diameter: 13.5 cm; Weight: 663 g
