Description:

A CHINESE JADE ARCHAISTIC STYLE LIDDED VASE, QING DYNASTY (1644-1911) A Chinese jade archaistic style lidded vase, Qing dynasty, of flattened rectangular hu form, carved from pale celadon-green jade with russet and honey-toned inclusions. The vessel rises from a stepped rectangular foot to a square-section mouth, with a conforming removable cover. The body is carved in low relief with archaistic taotie masks, scroll borders and geometric bands, the sides set with stylised pierced flanges and rounded scroll-form handles. The design consciously draws on ancient ritual bronze forms, a taste especially favoured in the Qing period, when jade carvings often reinterpreted archaic bronzes in a refined and decorative courtly manner. The pale translucent stone, softened edges and polished surface contrast with the formal, antique-inspired decoration, giving the piece both a scholarly and ornamental character. The cover repeats the stepped architectural form of the body, with matching archaistic borders and lateral flange details. Natural veining and russet markings run through the stone, most visibly across the body and cover, adding variation to the otherwise pale jade tone. Height: 20 cm
