Description:

A CHINESE SMOKEY QUARTZ & AGATE SNUFF BOTTLE, QING DYNASTY (1644-1911) Of flattened rectangular form with rounded shoulders and a short cylindrical neck, this Qing dynasty snuff bottle is carved from smoky quartz or agate, the stone displaying a dark translucent brown tone with paler inclusions worked into the decorative scheme. It is accompanied by a pale green stopper and spoon, the contrast between the dark body and lighter fitting enhancing the compact, jewel-like character of the piece. The front is carved in relief with a dense arrangement of vine leaves, trailing stems and pendant grape clusters, the paler areas of the stone skilfully used to articulate the foliage and fruit against the smoky ground. The carving has a layered, almost cameo-like effect, with the raised pale decoration standing forward from the darker body and giving the surface a rich textural quality. The reverse is more lightly incised with a landscape scene, including trees, architecture and small figures, creating a pleasing contrast between the bold relief of the grapevine and the subtler linear treatment of the opposite face. The grapevine motif carries auspicious associations in Chinese decorative art, particularly ideas of abundance, fertility and continuity, suggested by the clustering fruit and twisting tendrils. Its use on a snuff bottle is especially appropriate: the small scale invites close examination, while the organic carving gives the object a tactile quality suited to handling. The landscape on the reverse further places the bottle within the cultivated visual world of Qing scholar taste, where miniature objects often condensed natural imagery, symbolic meaning and technical refinement. Hardstone snuff bottles of the Qing dynasty were prized not merely as containers but as intimate luxury objects. Their value lay in the careful selection of material, the ability to exploit natural colour variations, and the precision required to carve stone on such a small scale. In this example, the darker smoky body provides depth, while the paler agate-like areas are deliberately brought forward to form the grapevine decoration, demonstrating the lapidary’s sensitivity to the inherent qualities of the stone. The bottle is a well-balanced example of Qing hardstone carving, combining auspicious botanical imagery, refined material contrast and the practical elegance associated with the snuff bottle tradition. Its relief carving, translucent tones and dual decorative treatment give the piece both ornamental richness and scholarly restraint. Height: 7.5cm
