Description:

A CLOISONNE ENAMEL SCREEN, LATE MING OR EARLY QING, 17TH-18TH CENTURY The screen is of rectangular form, set within a red-lacquered wooden frame and raised on four cabriole legs with a shaped apron. The central cloisonné enamel panel is inset into the top, creating a low table-like structure whose vivid red exterior provides a strong contrast to the intricate enamel surface. The form combines furniture and pictorial display, its compact scale giving the object a decorative yet intimate presence. The enamel panel is densely composed with a landscape scene of cranes beneath a pine tree, set among rocks, flowering plants and water. The design is worked in gilt cloisons against a bright turquoise ground, with blue rockwork, green banks, white and black plumage, and touches of red, yellow and purple creating a richly patterned surface. The close network of wirework gives definition to the pine needles, feathers, clouds and striated water, producing a lively balance between pictorial detail and ornamental structure. The screen’s subject is deeply auspicious. Cranes and pine trees are traditional emblems of longevity, resilience and refined seclusion, while the rocky landscape evokes the idealised realms of the scholar and the immortal. The placement of the enamel scene within a raised frame suggests an object intended for display, contemplation or use within a furnished interior, where its imagery would have carried both decorative and symbolic value. Cloisonné enamel of the late Ming and early Qing period often favoured bold colour, dense composition and strong contrasts between turquoise grounds and gilt wire outlines. Here, the enamel panel is paired with a lacquered wooden support, reflecting a taste for combining media and for presenting enamel work within architectural or furniture-like settings. The result is an object that bridges pictorial image, auspicious emblem and functional form. This screen is a distinctive seventeenth- to eighteenth-century enamel work, notable for its crane-and-pine landscape, vivid colour and unusual integration of cloisonné decoration within a red-lacquered stand.
