Description:

A COCO-DE-MER BEGGAR'S BOWL (KASHKUL), PERSIA, LATE 18TH/19TH CENTURY
Persia, Late 18th to 19th century

Description:
Dark patinated coco-de-mer shell with finely carved and incised inscriptions in elegant nastaʿlīq script, framed by interlacing bands and geometric borders. The form is traditionally boat-shaped with a deeply recessed interior and two metal suspension loops attached at each end. Kashkuls were often carried by dervishes or wandering Sufis, used for collecting alms or sustenance.

Dimensions: 29 x 11 cm

This beggar’s bowl is a fine example of Persian craftsmanship using natural forms. The use of coco-de-mer, a rare and exotic material, along with the sophisticated calligraphic and vegetal motifs, reflects the object’s dual function as both a ritualistic and status item.

Comparable examples:

  • A similar carved coco-de-mer kashkul with inscriptions sold at Sotheby’s, London, Arts of the Islamic World, 20 April 2016, Lot 164, for £11,875.

  • Another Persian kashkul in the form of a coco-de-mer with suspension loops sold at Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art, 23 October 2018, Lot 98, for £9,375.

  • A closely related example in the David Collection, Copenhagen, inv. no. 6/2006, features comparable calligraphic decoration and proportions.

Note:
The kashkul is a symbolic object in Sufi culture, representing humility and detachment from worldly possessions. The use of rare and naturally curved coco-de-mer shells adds a spiritual and aesthetic quality, enhancing its association with mystical journeying and devotion.
