Description:

A COPPER ALLOY FIGURE OF CROWNED BUDDHA, 17TH-18TH CEN TURY A copper alloy figure of a crowned Buddha, seated in dhyanasana on a double lotus base. The Buddha is richly adorned with an elaborate crown, earrings, necklaces and arm ornaments, presenting him not as an ascetic monk but in a jewelled, royal form. His hands are held low before the body, supporting a small vessel, while the face is cast with a serene, meditative expression. Crowned Buddha imagery is especially associated with later Himalayan and Sino-Tibetan Buddhist traditions, where the Buddha may be represented in a transcendent, universal form. The crown and jewellery symbolise spiritual authority, enlightenment and the transformation of worldly kingship into sacred wisdom. The lotus base reinforces the image’s devotional function, linking the figure to purity and awakening. The surface shows a dark, aged patina with rubbing to the raised details, suggesting long handling or ritual use. Wear to the gilded or polished high points, especially on the face, jewellery and lotus petals, gives the figure a softened appearance typical of devotional bronzes of this period. Height: 19 cm; Weight: 850 g
