Description:

Lot 271. A DAMASCENED STEEL BOWL
Safavid Iran, 17th Century

A magnificent damascened steel bowl from the Safavid period, crafted in Iran during the 17th century. The vessel is of elegant rounded form on a short flaring foot, richly inlaid with silver and gold to form calligraphic and geometric medallions arranged symmetrically around the exterior.

Each medallion features intricately rendered Thuluth inscriptions, invoking blessings and attributes of God, bordered by delicate dotted and linear frames. The interior retains traces of its original polished surface, showing a natural patina of age that enhances the contrast of the damascened decoration.

This piece exemplifies the refined metalwork traditions of Safavid Iran, where artists elevated steel into a luxurious medium through the precise technique of koftgari (gold and silver inlay). Bowls of this type were both functional and ceremonial, often associated with royal banquets or used for presenting sweetmeats or rosewater.
