Description:

Lot 200. A DAMASCENED WATERED STEEL PUSH DAGGER (KATAR), MUGHAL INDIA, 19TH CENTURY

This exquisite Mughal katar from 19th-century India exemplifies the high artistry of Indo-Islamic metalwork.

The double-edged watered steel blade (wootz) features damascened gold and silver floral motifs, delicately inlaid across the hilt and the forte of the blade. The H-shaped handle consists of two crossbars with a grip designed for firm control, typical of South Asian push daggers.

The surface pattern of the blade displays a fine mohar (rose-like) Damascus pattern, achieved through controlled forging of high-carbon steel layers. The decorative details include foliate tendrils, petal motifs, and engraved panels, all enriched with inlay work in precious metals.

The scabbard, covered in snakeskin, enhances its luxury and rarity, indicating that the piece was likely intended for ceremonial or aristocratic use rather than combat.
