Description:

Lot 37. A DAMASCUS CINTAMANI UNDERGLAZE-PAINTED POTTERY BORDER TILE
Syria, Circa 1600

Formed from fritware and painted in underglaze cobalt blue, turquoise, and emerald green, this rectangular border tile is decorated with a flowing cintamani motif of alternating cloud bands and paired roundels enclosing stylised blossoms. The design is framed to one side by a narrow turquoise border filled with linked quatrefoils outlined in black. The glaze is bright and even, with minor surface pitting and small areas of wear consistent with architectural use.

Tiles of this type were produced in Damascus workshops during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, reflecting Ottoman stylistic influence transmitted through the İznik tradition. Such tiles were commonly used to embellish religious and domestic interiors, their rhythmic patterns contributing to the harmonious architectural decoration characteristic of Syrian Ottoman design.
