Description:

Lot 85. A DIYARBAKIR ÇİNTAMANI POTTERY TILE, OTTOMAN TURKEY, LATE 16TH / EARLY 17TH CENTURY

A beautifully preserved Ottoman pottery tile from Diyarbakır, exemplifying the çintamani motif — a design combining stylized “tiger stripes” and roundels, symbolizing power and prosperity in Ottoman decorative arts. The tile’s composition features bold sinuous white stripes interspersed with triple-dot motifs and large cream roundels with ochre centers, all set against a rich cobalt blue background accented with turquoise hearts and droplets.

The glaze retains a glossy, glass-like surface with minor age-related wear, typical of early Ottoman ceramics. This piece reflects the high artistry of provincial Ottoman production that adapted the classical Iznik aesthetic into regional styles, particularly seen in Diyarbakır kilns of the late 16th century.

Dimensions: 24 × 18 cm
Provenance: Private Collection, London; acquired from the late Henry Brownrigg, previously Christie's Islamic Art Sale, Lot 438, 07/10/2008
