Description:

Lot 216. A FATIMID KUFIC INSCRIBED ROCK CRYSTAL AMULET
Egypt, Circa 11th Century

Carved from a single piece of translucent rock crystal, this elongated hexagonal bead is finely inscribed in bold Kufic script along its sides with a dedicatory or benedictory formula. The surfaces are precisely cut and polished, producing crisp edges and smooth planes that catch the light with a soft inner glow. The clarity of the crystal is partially veiled by faint natural inclusions and traces of wear, lending a subtle opalescence to the object. Each face is engraved with confident, even strokes, the inscription framed within narrow vertical borders.

The perforation runs cleanly through the length of the piece, allowing suspension as a pendant or threading among other beads. Minute tool marks around the drill aperture are visible under magnification, attesting to its careful workmanship and age.

Amulets of this type were prized in Fatimid Egypt for their apotropaic and devotional properties, the engraved script serving both as a statement of faith and as protection for the wearer. Rock crystal, associated with purity and divine light, was among the most valued materials employed in Fatimid lapidary art, reflecting the refinement and spiritual symbolism of courtly craftsmanship in 11th-century Cairo.
