Description:

Lot 238. A GEM-SET JADE MIRROR, INDIA, 19TH CENTURY

This exquisite hand mirror exemplifies the refined artistry of late Mughal and princely Indian craftsmanship in the 19th century. The mirror is fashioned from pale green jade (nephrite), carved on one side with a symmetrical floral mandala radiating from a central rosette — a motif deeply rooted in Indian decorative and symbolic traditions.

The reverse features a shaped mirror bordered by delicate floral inlay in gold, set with cabochon rubies and turquoise. The gemstones form an elegant bouquet pattern, each element outlined with fine gold wire, evoking the kundan technique perfected in Mughal ateliers.

Such mirrors were luxury objects, often commissioned by the aristocracy and intended for both personal grooming and ceremonial display. Their intricate decoration symbolized refinement, wealth, and auspicious beauty.
