Description:

Lot 47. A GOLD AND ENAMEL OTTOMAN POCKET WATCH WITH THE PORTRAIT OF SULTAN ABDÜLMECID I
Switzerland for the Ottoman Market, Circa 1850

An exceptionally fine and ornate gold open-face pocket watch, richly enamelled and decorated for the Ottoman market. The front of the case displays a delicately painted portrait of Sultan Abdülmecid I (r. 1839–1861), set within a lavish frame of champlevé and polychrome enamel floral motifs on a textured gold ground.

The reverse features a finely executed miniature view of Constantinople, depicting the city’s skyline with mosques and minarets beside the Bosphorus, bordered by matching floral enamelwork.

The white enamel dial is embellished with green Roman numerals and floral decoration, surrounded by a fine gold bezel. The signed and numbered gilt movement, inscribed Augu. Courvoisier & Cie, bears engraved details in French, noting échappement libre and parachute et compensateur, and is serially numbered No. 39846.

A luxurious and historically significant example of mid-19th-century Swiss craftsmanship for the Ottoman court, combining technical refinement with rich Orientalist artistry.
