A HIGHLY UNUSUAL FATIMID BROWN GLASS CUP, EGYPT, 9TH–10TH CENTURY
Fatimid Egypt, 9th–10th century

Description:
Free-blown dark amber-brown glass cup of squat cylindrical form with slightly flaring rim. The exterior is decorated with a raised honeycomb or dimpled pattern below a plain band encircling the upper register. Two opposing small looped lugs project from the body, possibly for suspension or holding with cords. The base is wheel-cut with a radiating sunburst pattern. The interior shows signs of surface iridescence and light weathering consistent with age. This example is notable for its unusual form and rich hue.

Diameter: 12cm

Provenance: European Private Collection

This rare example of Fatimid glassware illustrates a highly creative approach to form and texture, showcasing the technical virtuosity of glassmakers in early Islamic Egypt. The rich amber tone is typical of Fatimid-era colored glass, which was widely prized across the Islamic world.

Comparable examples:

  • A Fatimid brown-glass handled bowl, Egypt, 10th century, sold at Christie’s, London, Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, 26 April 2012, Lot 82, for £10,625.

  • A similar Fatimid dimpled glass cup with loop handles, 10th century, sold at Bonhams, London, Islamic and Indian Art, 23 October 2018, Lot 110, for £9,375.

  • A wheel-cut amber glass vessel, Fatimid period, 10th century, sold at Sotheby’s, London, Arts of the Islamic World, 24 October 2017, Lot 147, for £11,250.

Note:
Fatimid glass is admired for its innovation in form and technique, often incorporating decorative dimpling, looped lugs, and fine surface finishing. Such vessels were likely luxury items used for drinking or possibly ritualistic contexts. The wheel-cut sunburst on the base is a rare and elegant touch.
