Description:

Lot 208. AN IZNIK POTTERY TILE Ottoman Turkey, Circa 1575 Finely painted in polychrome under a clear glaze on a white fritware body, the tile displays a rich cobalt-blue ground enlivened with red, green, and turquoise floral scrolls. The central composition features a long serrated saz leaf entwined with stylised rosettes and arabesques, the design bordered by curling tendrils characteristic of mid-sixteenth-century Iznik ornament. The colours remain vibrant, the red showing its typical raised relief where thickly applied. Minor surface wear and edge irregularities are visible, consistent with age and architectural use. The reverse is plain and unglazed, showing traces of firing and accretions from installation mortar, with the ceramic fabric revealing a fine pale buff tone. Tiles of this type formed part of large decorative wall panels in Ottoman religious and civic architecture, notably adorning mosques, palaces, and pavilions. Produced in the renowned workshops of Iznik, such tiles exemplified the synthesis of colour, geometry, and botanical ornament central to Ottoman aesthetic ideals during the reign of Sultan Selim II and Murad III. Measurements: 15 x 11 cm
