A KASHAN BLUE-GLAZED MOULDED POTTERY BOTTLE VASE, PERSIA, 12TH CENTURY
Kashan, Persia, Seljuk Period, 12th century

Description:
Of baluster form with a compressed globular body resting on a short foot, rising to a narrow tapering neck and a flaring tulip-shaped fluted mouth. Crafted from a fritware body and covered in a rich cobalt blue glaze. The shoulder is decorated in relief with a band of calligraphic inscriptions interwoven with stylised foliate motifs. The inscription in naskh script includes well-wishing expressions: ‘Blessing and good-fortune and joy and happiness and...’ Typical craquelure and age-related encrustations present.

Note:
The Kashan kilns were among the most technically sophisticated ceramic centres of the medieval Islamic world, producing moulded and lustre-decorated wares for elite patrons. The use of cobalt blue glaze, combined with elegant inscriptions wishing prosperity, was particularly admired in courtly circles of the Seljuk period.
