Description:

A KASHMIR TEXTILE HANGING, 19TH CENTURY
Kashmir, India, 19th century

Description:
A rectangular Kashmiri textile densely woven with rows of repeating boteh (paisley) motifs in crimson, black, and ochre on a fine wool ground. The botehs are arranged in alternating directions, forming a rhythmic and symmetrical composition. The textile is bordered with an elaborate gold metallic lace featuring floral loop designs. The reverse is lined with plain ochre fabric, suggesting this piece was intended for interior display or ceremonial use rather than as a garment or utilitarian cloth.

This example exhibits the refined craftsmanship associated with Kashmiri weavers in the 19th century, particularly their command of the iconic boteh motif, which became emblematic of Kashmiri textile art and was widely emulated in both Indian and European traditions.

Comparable examples:

  • A 19th-century Kashmiri shawl fragment with dense boteh decoration sold at Christie’s, London, Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, 27 April 2023, Lot 226, for £7,560.

  • A Kashmiri wool panel with gold thread highlights and boteh motifs, circa 1880, achieved £6,875 at Sotheby’s, London, Arts of the Islamic World, 1 May 2019, Lot 144.

  • A related silk and wool hanging with metallic lace borders, Kashmir, late 19th century, sold at Bonhams, London, Islamic and Indian Art, 15 June 2021, Lot 57, for £5,000.

Note:
The distinctive boteh motif, a symbol of fertility and eternity, is central to the visual language of Kashmiri textile design. Pieces of this nature were often made for aristocratic households or temple use, combining decorative elegance with spiritual symbolism.
