Description:

A KASHMIR TEXTILE HANGING, 19TH CENTURY
Kashmir, India, 19th century

Description:
A finely woven rectangular textile composed of alternating horizontal bands of crimson red, indigo blue, ivory, and saffron yellow, featuring repeated geometric and floral boteh motifs. The textile is bordered with a shimmering metallic fringe. The reverse is lined with a plain crimson silk backing, indicating its likely use as a ceremonial or decorative hanging rather than utilitarian textile. The vibrant vegetal dyes and gold-thread trimming are typical of high-quality Kashmiri workmanship of the period.

This richly patterned hanging reflects the regional aesthetic of 19th-century Kashmir, noted for its fine woollen and silk weaves, often incorporating boteh and stylised vegetal elements in symmetrical repetition. Such pieces were used for both domestic display and religious settings.

Comparable examples:

  • A 19th-century Kashmiri textile with similar boteh design and metallic edging sold at Sotheby’s, London, Arts of the Islamic World, 25 October 2017, Lot 142, for £6,250.

  • A comparable embroidered Kashmiri panel with metallic thread, late 19th century, achieved £5,625 at Christie’s, London, Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, 2 May 2019, Lot 235.

  • A related silk and wool textile with boteh decoration and gold brocade, Kashmir, circa 1880, sold at Bonhams, London, Islamic and Indian Art, 19 June 2018, Lot 45, for £4,800.

Note:
Kashmiri textiles of this period were prized for their intricate patterns and luxurious materials, often exported to European markets. The inclusion of metallic fringe suggests this textile may have adorned a shrine, ceremonial space, or aristocratic interior.
