Description:

: A KASHMIR TEXTILE HANGING, 19TH CENTURY
Kashmir, India, 19th century

Description:
Silk and metallic thread brocade; rectangular textile composed of a vibrant crimson ground adorned with repeating paisley and floral buta motifs, densely arranged in vertical alignment. The border features metallic thread embroidery with circular rosettes and a fringe of golden thread at all edges. The reverse is composed of hand-stitched orange silk panels, showing age-related wear and dye migration.

This richly patterned textile exemplifies Kashmiri craftsmanship in the 19th century, noted for its luxurious use of silk and metallic thread. Such hangings were often used for ceremonial or decorative purposes, reflecting a sophisticated visual culture that favored saturated colors and intricate patterning.
