Description:

A KASHMIR TEXTILE HANGING, 19TH CENTURY
Kashmir, India, 19th century

Description:
Wool ground intricately worked with chain-stitch embroidery (crewelwork) in fine wool threads, forming a dense arrangement of paisley boteh, floral sprays, and scrolling vines in warm tones of terracotta, ochre, ivory, and deep green. The composition is framed by multiple borders with repeating vegetal motifs. Likely used as a wall hanging, furnishing panel, or part of a ceremonial textile ensemble.

This textile exemplifies the refined needlework traditions of 19th-century Kashmir, where artisans employed detailed chain-stitch techniques to produce richly decorative works for domestic and export markets. The harmonious palette and elegant layout reflect classical Kashmiri aesthetic sensibilities. Surface wear, minor losses to embroidery, and fading commensurate with age and use.

A related embroidered wool panel was offered at Sotheby’s, London, Arts of the Islamic World, 25 October 2017, Lot 53, achieving £2,750.

Note:
Kashmiri textile hangings were highly valued for their decorative appeal and craftsmanship, often commissioned for elite interiors or gifted during significant life events. The intricate boteh and floral motifs draw on a long-standing visual vocabulary rooted in Persianate and Mughal artistic traditions
