A KASHMIR TEXTILE ROUNDEL, 19TH CENTURY
Kashmir, India, 19th century

Description:
Silk velvet ground with elaborate zardozi embroidery in metallic thread and sequins, worked in floral patterns with central lotus medallion motif surrounded by a ring of smaller blossoms and foliage. Accented with colored glass beads. Backed with cotton or linen fabric. Possibly served as a ceremonial cushion cover or decorative textile.

A vivid example of 19th-century Kashmiri textile artistry, this roundel exhibits the region’s characteristic richness of design and material. The deep crimson velvet base contrasts with the shimmering gilt thread, showcasing fine craftsmanship and balanced composition. Minor age-related wear and some thread loss, consistent with use and age.
