Description:

Lot 15. A KUTAHYA POTTERY JAR
Ottoman Turkey, 18th Century

This charming, bulbous Kutahya ceramic jar is decorated in the region’s characteristic palette of cobalt blue on a white ground, accented with touches of yellow around the rim. The body features lively floral sprays—stylised rosettes, serrated leaves, and feathery blossoms—painted in fluid cobalt tones that softly diffuse into the glaze, a hallmark of 18th-century Kutahya wares. A braided cobalt border encircles the foot, complementing the narrow frieze of small blue floral motifs around the shoulder.

The form swells elegantly at the belly before tapering to a short neck. The rim, with its yellow stippled band, shows wear and areas of restoration. Craquelure, surface staining, and a few filled losses are visible, consistent with age and use. The foot appears roughly formed, typical of utilitarian Kutahya vessels, and the glaze exhibits natural irregularities.

Despite these signs of age, the jar retains the charm and vibrancy associated with the celebrated Christian potters of Kutahya, whose ceramics were prized throughout the Ottoman Empire.
