Description:

A LARGE FATIMID QURAN LEAF, 9TH–10TH CENTURY, EGYPT
Fatimid Egypt, 3rd–4th century AH / 9th–10th century AD

Description:
An exceptional large-format Quranic leaf on creamy parchment, penned in a bold, angular early Kufic script. The spacious layout and commanding calligraphic hand are indicative of a manuscript intended for communal use, likely produced in a scriptorium under the patronage of the Fatimid court in Egypt. The script is rendered in dark brown ink, with red diacritical marks lightly applied to aid recitation.

The proportions, scale, and script style align with Quran manuscripts created for ceremonial or mosque purposes. Early Kufic Qurans of this scale are rare survivals and serve as a foundational expression of early Islamic manuscript culture.

Measurements:
45.5 x 35 cm

Comparable examples:

  • A large Kufic Quran folio, North Africa or Egypt, Fatimid period, sold at Christie’s, London, 28 October 2021, Lot 20, for £81,250.

Provenance:

Note:
This leaf is a superb example of early Islamic calligraphy and manuscript production. With its strong visual rhythm and commanding presence, it reflects the reverence afforded to the Quran during the Fatimid period and the high craftsmanship of scribes working within religious institutions. Its preservation on vellum further underscores its ceremonial importance.
