Description:

Lot 52. A LARGE IZNIK POTTERY DISH
Ottoman Turkey, Circa 1630

Painted in a polychrome palette of bole red, cobalt blue, turquoise, and green on a white fritware body, this large dish displays a densely arranged symmetrical design centred on interlacing saz-style leaves and split-palmette motifs. The central field is filled with sweeping green and cobalt scrolls outlined in black, punctuated by raised red accents applied in thick, slightly glossy pools typical of the period. The cavetto is enclosed by a wide border of spiralling cloud-scrolls in bold black, their rhythmic coils crisply drawn against the pale ground. The glaze shows an overall fine craquelure, with minor surface abrasions and small areas of wear to the rim.

The reverse is coated in a pale bluish glaze and sparsely decorated with alternating turquoise and cobalt rosettes spaced around the rim. The footring is unglazed, revealing the buff ceramic body, with typical kiln grit adhering and expected firing flaws visible, including a central spur mark within the recessed base.

Dishes of this size and complexity reflect the later phase of Iznik production, in which potters increasingly favoured broad, interlaced vegetal schemes enriched with bold red and green. Such works served both domestic and display functions within elite Ottoman interiors and demonstrate the continued refinement of imperial ceramic workshops into the early 17th century.
