Description:

Lot 60. A LARGE MUGHAL INSCRIBED SPINEL PENDANT
18th/19th Century, India

The pendant is set with an elongated, rectangular cabochon spinel of deep reddish-pink hue, its polished surface displaying natural internal veining and reflective striations characteristic of the gemstone. The front is engraved with a vertical Persian inscription in elegant naskh script, reading Mahabat Allah (“The love of God”), the lettering appearing in warm contrast against the saturated colour of the stone. The cabochon is mounted in a simple gold bezel with a plain suspension loop and bail, the metal retaining a soft matte finish.

No reverse engraving is visible; the underside of the stone is concealed within the closed gold mount.

Inscribed spinels of this type were esteemed in Mughal India both as personal talismans and as expressions of piety, their inscriptions intended to convey devotional sentiments while enhancing the perceived potency of the gem.

Measurements: Length of stone 4.5 cm; Weight 38 g
