Description:

Lot 148. A LARGE SOGDIAN SILK SAMITE FRAGMENT, CENTRAL ASIA, 7TH–9TH CENTURY

Woven in rich red, brown, and cream silks, this large textile fragment depicts a dynamic combat scene between a lion and a horse enclosed within a circular medallion, repeated twice vertically. The roundels are bordered by interlacing vine motifs, while the lower section features a horizontal register adorned with Kufic-style geometric ornamentation.

The weaver’s mastery is evident in the intricate rendering of the animals’ intertwined bodies, the stylized musculature, and the ornamental harness of the horse. The use of bold contrast between red and cream threads accentuates the movement and vitality characteristic of Sogdian design.

Textiles such as this were produced along the Silk Road during the height of Sogdian mercantile influence, exemplifying the synthesis of Iranian, Chinese, and steppe artistic traditions. The motif of a lion attacking a horse was a popular emblem of power and triumph, frequently appearing in luxury silks traded from Central Asia to Byzantium and Tang China.

Dimensions: 75 × 35 cm
