Description:

A LONGQUAN CELADON CONICAL BOWL SOUTHERN SONG DYNASTY (1127-1279) A Longquan celadon conical bowl, Southern Song dynasty, with gently flaring sides rising from a short circular foot. The vessel is covered in a pale sea-green celadon glaze, pooling slightly around the foot and thinning at the rim, where the exposed body has fired to a warm buff tone. The interior is freely incised with floral motifs, now subtly visible beneath the translucent glaze. Longquan celadon wares were among the most admired ceramics of the Song period, valued for their restrained forms, luminous glazes and quiet surface decoration. Bowls of this type reflect the Southern Song taste for refinement rather than overt ornament: the form is simple, the glaze soft and even, and the incised design is deliberately understated, emerging only as the light catches the surface. The crackle visible in the glaze is consistent with age and with the natural tension between glaze and body. The unglazed rim and foot areas help show the pale stoneware body beneath. Old paper labels inside the bowl describe it as a “Ying-Qing (Pale Celadon)” ware bowl and give a Song dynasty attribution, though the catalogue title identifies it more specifically as Longquan celadon. Diameter: 18.5 cm Height: 6 cm
