Description:

A MAMLUK SILVER-INLAID BRASS CANDLESTICK BASE, EGYPT OR SYRIA, 14TH CENTURY
Mamluk Sultanate, Egypt or Syria, 14th century

Description:
Brass inlaid with silver; of flaring cylindrical form with a broad foot and slightly tapering neck, intricately engraved with dense arabesque scrollwork and roundels enclosing floral motifs, interspersed with bold thuluth inscription bands featuring invocations and possibly the names or titles of patrons. Traces of silver inlay remain within the script and borders. The base exhibits a subtly hammered central depression, possibly from long ceremonial or utilitarian use.

Height: 13cm

Candle holders of this form were integral to mosque furnishings during the Mamluk era and often carried Qur'anic inscriptions or benedictory phrases intended to reflect divine light—both literal and symbolic.

Comparable examples:

  • A Mamluk silver-inlaid candlestick base, 14th century, sold at Christie’s London, Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, 27 April 2023, Lot 116, for £50,400.

  • Mamluk brass candlestick with silver and copper inlay, Syria, early 14th century, sold at Sotheby’s, 25 April 2018, Lot 118, for £56,250.

  • A large Mamluk candlestick, Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art, 25 October 2022, Lot 95, realised £47,500.

Note:
Mamluk metalwork is celebrated for its elaborate epigraphy and refined craftsmanship. These candlestick bases were not only utilitarian but also conveyed status and piety. The quality of the engraving and preservation of form in this example suggest it was produced by an accomplished artisan likely working in Cairo or Damascus, two of the most prominent Mamluk artistic centres.
