Description:

Lot 59. A Monumental Iznik Çintamani Pottery Border Tile, Ottoman Turkey, circa 1570

This striking Iznik pottery border tile represents the height of 16th-century Ottoman ceramic artistry, produced during the reign of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent or his immediate successors. The tile is painted in the classic Iznik palette of cobalt blue, turquoise, and bole red under a transparent glaze, featuring the powerful çintamani motif — composed of pairs of undulating white bands alternating with groups of three roundels.

The çintamani design, derived from Central Asian and Timurid iconography, was adopted by the Ottomans as a symbol of power and protection, appearing frequently in court textiles, manuscripts, and architectural decoration. Its rhythmic repetition here, framed by red borders, would have formed part of a monumental frieze, perhaps adorning a palace or imperial pavilion. The crisp execution and luminous colors demonstrate the technical excellence of Iznik workshops at their creative zenith.

This tile exemplifies the fusion of symbolism and geometry that defines Ottoman decorative aesthetics. Its abstract yet dynamic pattern conveys both motion and harmony, while its deep cobalt ground and lustrous glaze evoke the serene grandeur of Ottoman imperial design.
