Description:

Lot 81. A MUGHAL SPINACH-GREEN JADE HORSE-HEADED HILT
19th Century, India

Carved from a rich, spinach-green jade with a softly polished, slightly translucent surface, the hilt is formed as an elongated handle terminating in a finely rendered horse’s head. The head is shown alert, with drilled nostrils, defined eyes, and a parted mouth. The mane is incised along the back in a series of parallel chevrons, descending to the gently tapering grip. The lower terminal is decorated with a symmetrical carved rosette framed by scrolling volutes. Minor surface inclusions and natural variegation of the stone are visible throughout.

No reverse carving is present; the back shows the natural curvature of the jade and the continuation of the incised mane.

Hilts of this type were produced for high-status daggers and swords in the Mughal and later Indo-Islamic courts, where hardstone grips were prized for their durability, luxurious material, and refined workmanship.
