Description:

A PAIR OF CHINESE BLUE & WHITE PEACH DISHES, GUANGXU MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1875-1908) The pair comprises two Chinese blue and white porcelain dishes, each decorated to the interior with fruiting peach branches arranged around a central roundel. The design is painted in rich cobalt blue against a white ground, with clusters of peaches, slender leaves and flowering sprays distributed across the well. The decoration is enclosed by a continuous blue border of scrolling pattern at the rim, giving the dishes a crisp and balanced appearance. The reverse of each dish is more simply decorated, with blue borders and small freely painted motifs around the cavetto. Each bears a six-character Guangxu mark to the base, reading as a Guangxu-period mark, and the catalogue identifies the dishes as Guangxu mark and of the period. The slightly softened glaze, minor surface wear and traces of use visible around the foot rims are consistent with age and handling. Peaches are an auspicious subject in Chinese art, traditionally associated with longevity and immortality. Here, the repeated fruiting branches create a lively decorative rhythm while retaining the restrained elegance of blue and white porcelain. The paired format adds to their decorative appeal, suggesting they were intended to be viewed and used as a matched set. This pair of dishes presents a refined late Qing interpretation of a classic auspicious motif, combining clear cobalt decoration, formal symmetry and period Guangxu marks. Diameter: 24.5 cm
