Description:

A PAIR OF SILVER SELJUK BRACELETS, IRAN, 11TH–13TH CENTURY
Iran, Seljuk period, 11th–13th century

Description:
A matched pair of silver cuff bracelets, each of flat band form with a pronounced central ridge and flared terminals. Finely engraved with vegetal arabesques and stylised foliate designs, the surface retains traces of original niello and green patination. The design features rhythmic, almost architectural repetition of scrolling vinework, a hallmark of Seljuk decorative arts. Slight surface encrustation and wear consistent with age, but overall in stable condition.

Dimensions: Diameter approx. 5.5 cm
Weight: 56g (combined)

These bracelets are exemplary of Seljuk silverwork, which favoured clean forms, bold motifs, and detailed engraving. Such items were not only decorative but also served as prestige objects in Seljuk Iran’s courtly and aristocratic circles.

Comparable examples:

  • A Seljuk silver-gilt bracelet, Iran, 11th–12th century, sold at Sotheby’s, London, Arts of the Islamic World, 25 October 2017, Lot 88, for £81,250

  • A rare pair of Seljuk silver bracelets with figural and floral decoration, Iran, 12th century, sold at Christie’s, Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, 27 April 2023, Lot 63, for £68,750

  • A single Seljuk silver bracelet with nielloed decoration, Iran, 11th century, sold at Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art, 23 October 2018, Lot 59, for £56,250.

Note:
Bracelets such as these were popular in Seljuk Iran and Central Asia and often reflect both Turko-Persian and pre-Islamic Sasanian influences. The pronounced central boss was both decorative and symbolic, possibly representing solar or protective motifs. Surviving pairs from this period are exceptionally rare, especially those retaining their full ornamental integrity.
