Description:

A PARCEL-GILT BRONZE 'MYTHICAL BEAST' TRIPOD CENSER AND COVER, QING DYNASTY (1644-1911) The censer is of compressed globular form, raised on three short spreading feet and fitted with a pierced domed cover. The cover is surmounted by a seated mythical beast finial, modelled with open mouth, curled mane and upright posture. The body is finished in a dark patinated bronze, contrasted with parcel-gilt mounts and decorative plaques. Around the exterior are alternating raised gilt panels, variously cast with birds, flowers and foliate motifs, together with beast-mask handles suspending loose rings. The shoulder is encircled by a ribbed gilt band, below a broad gilt collar and a darker wood-effect band at the rim. The pierced cover is cast with scrolling floral decoration, allowing the piece to function as a censer while also serving as an ornamental object. The underside and interior show age-related wear and surface patination, with rubbing to the gilding, minor scratches and handling marks consistent with use. The contrast between the blackened bronze surface and gilt detailing gives the vessel a strong decorative presence. Height: 13 cm Weight: 625 g
