Description:

Lot 257. A PERSIAN BRASS JUG
19th Century

Of elegant baluster form with spirally fluted body rising from a circular foot to a tall neck and hinged domed lid, this vessel is finely worked from brass with a warm golden patina. The flutes are smoothly hammered and evenly spaced, creating a rhythmic play of light across the surface. The spout is broad and gently arched, its exterior engraved with scrolling foliate motifs framed by zigzag and beaded borders. The hinged lid is ribbed to echo the body, surmounted by a small bud-shaped finial and encircled by a narrow band of cursive inscription. The slender handle, ribbed for grip, terminates in a finial knop and thumb-rest, its joints secured with neatly chased fittings.

The underside of the foot is embellished with a pierced eight-pointed star enclosing five raised bosses within a shallow central recess, combining decorative and functional precision.

Brass ewers of this type were widely used in 19th-century Persia for ablutionary and domestic purposes. Their refined profiles and intricate ornament reflect the continuation of earlier Islamic metalworking traditions, prized for both their practical craftsmanship and ornamental sophistication.
