Description:

Lot 211. A QAJAR STEEL BAZUBAND
Iran, 19th Century

Of circular form with projecting hinge loops at either side, finely chiselled in low relief with a dense inscription in thuluth script contained within a double border of scrolling floral tendrils and blossoms. The surface displays crisp tooling and subtle modelling, the silver-toned steel exhibiting a soft sheen with darker areas of patination enhancing the depth of the design. The raised rim is delicately scalloped, lending refinement to the overall form.

The reverse is plain and darkly patinated, showing light hammering and oxidation consistent with prolonged age and wear.

Bazubands of this type were worn as arm defences or protective amulets by high-ranking individuals and often bore Qur’anic verses or invocations intended to confer divine protection. The present example reflects the Qajar metalworkers’ command of both calligraphic and floral ornament, uniting devotional and decorative traditions characteristic of 19th-century Persian craftsmanship.
