Description:

A RARE BRONZE CALLIGRAPHIC INSCRIBED BASIN, DECCAN, INDIA, 17TH CENTURY
Deccan, India, 17th century

Description:
This shallow cast bronze basin is distinguished by its wide flaring rim, densely engraved with a continuous Arabic inscription in fine naskh script. The interior and exterior surfaces display a rich patina with areas of green verdigris, attesting to its age and authenticity. The inscription likely comprises benedictory phrases or Qur’anic verses, possibly connected to healing or ablutional use. The calligraphy is bordered with elegant scrolling arabesques, and the entire composition demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of proportion and symmetry.

Dimensions: 36cm x 7cm

Such vessels were often associated with spiritual or medicinal practices in the Islamic world, particularly in the Indian subcontinent where Qur'anic calligraphy was believed to imbue water with healing properties. This basin likely functioned in a ritual context, possibly for pouring or collecting water during religious ceremonies.

Comparable examples:

  • A similar bronze inscribed basin, Deccan, 17th century, sold at Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art, 25 October 2016, Lot 141, for £6,875.

  • A large Mughal bronze basin with Qur’anic inscriptions, North India, 17th century, sold at Sotheby’s, Arts of the Islamic World, 30 April 2014, Lot 117, for £8,750.

  • A Deccani inscribed basin with similar verdigris patina and epigraphic band, sold at Christie’s, Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, 27 October 2022, Lot 132, for £7,560.

Note:
The extensive surface inscription and the quality of the engraving suggest this piece was commissioned by a patron of considerable wealth and piety. Deccani metalwork from the 17th century is known for its bold forms, epigraphic emphasis, and use of patinated bronze, often serving both practical and spiritual purposes in courtly and religious settings.
