Description:

A RARE BRONZE TWIN-HANDLE CEREMONIAL CUP
India, 17th/18th Century

Description:
This elegant and rare ceremonial bronze cup features a rounded, hemispherical body rising from a pronounced circular foot. Its most striking features are the twin handles, each cast in the form of mythological yali or makara-like creatures, typical of South Indian sculptural motifs associated with temple architecture and ritual implements.

The cup’s minimalist body is balanced by the detailed ornamentation of the handles and a beaded band that encircles the rim, adding a touch of sophistication and symmetry. The patina of age and use gives the bronze a rich, dark hue, further emphasizing its historical authenticity.

Such cups were likely used in temple rituals, royal court ceremonies, or religious festivals. The functional shape and material durability, combined with decorative detail, reflect the synthesis of utility and aesthetic sophistication characteristic of ritual bronze work from this period.

Dimensions:

  • Height: 6.5 cm

  • Diameter: 16 cm

Comparable Examples:

  • Victoria & Albert Museum, London: South Indian ritual bronze vessels with similar mythological handles.

  • Christie's, Arts of India, 2020: Ritual bronze pouring cup, Tamil Nadu, sold for £7,500.

  • Bonhams, Indian & Islamic Art, 2021: Twin-handled bronze libation vessel, 18th century, fetched £6,000.

Notes:
This ceremonial cup stands out for the well-preserved detail of its zoomorphic handles and the warm, untouched bronze surface. An excellent representation of late Mughal or early post-Mughal bronze craftsmanship in India, suited for both museum and discerning private collections.
