Description:

Lot 21. A RARE FATIMID GOLD BICONICAL BEAD
Egypt, Circa 10th Century

Finely fashioned in high-purity gold, this elegant biconical bead is constructed from openwork filigree in delicate scrolling tendrils forming a symmetrical vegetal lattice. The wirework combines tightly coiled spirals and granulated details arranged in concentric registers, producing a rich surface texture and refined volumetric balance. The hollow body is joined at the midline by a narrow ribbed collar, with circular apertures at either end for stringing.

The craftsmanship exemplifies the technical and aesthetic sophistication of Fatimid goldsmiths, whose jewellery was prized across the Mediterranean for its mastery of filigree and granulation. Beads of this type likely served as elements in necklaces or ceremonial adornments, reflecting the luxury and courtly refinement of 10th-century Egypt under the Fatimid Caliphate.
