Description:

A CARVED CARNELIAN AMULET PENDANT IN GOLD MOUNT, 19TH CENTURY, PERSIA
Qajar Iran, 19th century

Description:
An oval carnelian amulet finely engraved with Arabic script arranged in a diagonal grid format across the surface, with each panel containing a sacred name or invocation. The stone is mounted in a high-karat gold frame with gently flared, stylised prongs and a lobed suspension loop. The carnelian is richly coloured in a deep red hue with natural striations visible across its surface.

The engraving is sharp and precise, suggesting its use as a protective talisman, invoking divine favour and repelling harm. The vibrant contrast between the gold and the carnelian enhances its visual and symbolic impact, underscoring its likely importance to its original owner.

Note:
Carnelian has been revered in Islamic culture for centuries, believed to offer spiritual protection and bring about divine blessings. When engraved with sacred inscriptions and mounted in gold, these amulets became deeply personal and powerful devotional objects. This pendant exemplifies the Qajar mastery of gemstone carving and the fusion of beauty with religious meaning.
