Description:

Lot 47. A RIMLESS IZNIK POTTERY DISH
Ottoman Turkey, Circa 1600

Painted in underglaze pigments on a clean white fritware body, the dish displays a vivid floral composition characteristic of late 16th–early 17th century Iznik workshops. The central field is filled with sweeping saz leaves in cobalt and turquoise, interspersed with clusters of small white blossoms and bold rosette-like flowers rendered in bole-red relief. Slender tulips and hyacinths rise among serrated leaves, their contours emphasised by fine black outlines. The palette is bright and stable, with the bole-red showing slight variation and pooling typical of the period. The surface retains a glossy, slightly crackled glaze with minor wear along the edges.

The reverse is covered in a pale bluish glaze and decorated sparingly with small turquoise and cobalt motifs, including simple floral or foliate marks spaced around the underside. The footring is unglazed, showing the buff-coloured ceramic body, with areas of encrustation and firing-related imperfections visible. A metal suspension loop is attached through a small perforation at the rim, indicating later adaptation for hanging.

Iznik dishes of this type were produced for both domestic and courtly use, their dense botanical ornament reflecting the stylised garden imagery central to Ottoman decorative arts. Such vessels served various dining and display purposes within elite households and palace complexes, illustrating the technical refinement and artistic vocabulary of the period’s imperial ateliers.
