A RIMLESS IZNIK POTTERY GRAPE DISH, OTTOMAN TURKEY, EARLY 17TH CENTURY
Ottoman Turkey, early 17th century

Description:
This elegant rimless Iznik pottery dish features a central roundel adorned with three large bunches of grapes, surrounded by spiraling tendrils and scalloped leaves, all rendered in underglaze cobalt blue and green on a white ground. The cavetto is decorated with scrolling floral vines and leaves, while the exterior showcases alternating blue and green stylized motifs. The dish rests on a short foot and measures 31 cm in diameter.

Dimensions: 31 cm diameter

The grape motif, inspired by early Ming ceramics of the 14th and 15th centuries, was a popular design in Iznik pottery during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. The rimless form reflects the influence of Chinese porcelain shapes, which were introduced into Ottoman ceramics in the 1530s. Such dishes were prized for their aesthetic appeal and were often used in both domestic and ceremonial contexts.
